Services – Salerno Medical Associates
The mission of Salerno Medical Associates is to provide the highest quality healthcare to the urban communities of northern New Jersey through proactive healthcare and disease management. Salerno Medical Associates uses the latest and most advanced equipment for best results and patient comfort during doctor visits.
Salerno Medical Associates has evolved as the needs of the community have evolved. As a result, we have built a traditional primary care practice and expanded its scope and field of services to include:
Civil Surgeon Immigration Medicine
A Civil Surgeon is a doctor, selected by the USCIS to conduct medical examinations of aliens in the United States who are applying for adjustment of status to permanent residence, or who are required by the USCIS to have a medical examination. Civil surgeons are not synonymous with panel physicians.
Diabetic Health Education
The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) report that more than 100 million U.S. adults are now living with diabetes or prediabetes. The report finds that 9.4 percent of the U.S. population have diabetes. Another 25 percent, are prediabetic, a condition that if not treated often leads to Type-2 diabetes within five years. It is often just a matter of dietary modifications that do not have to interfere with your love of food or enjoyment of life.
Gastroenterology And Hepatology
Our Gastroenterology and Hepatology Department specializes in screening, diagnosing and treating diseases and disorders of the digestive tract and liver. We are the first line of defense through testing for colon cancer, leaky gut or leaky bowel syndrome, food allergies, malabsorption in the small intestine, small intestinal bacteria overgrowth (SIBO) and a wide range of bowel allergies. In the liver we screen for and in some cases treat, among other conditions, celiac disease, fatty liver disease, cirrhosis and Hepatitis C.
Geriatricians specialize in the healthcare needs of people 65 and older. Geriatricians have received specialized training, and often Board Certification, in the diagnosis and treatment of a wide range of conditions that occur at a higher incidence in older populations. A high percentage of older adults take multiple medications. Well-versed in the side effects (adverse reactions) of a wide range of medications, and possible negative drug-drug interactions in patients taking multiple drugs, geriatricians help patients safely manage their complicated pharmacotherapy regimens.
Being proactive about health issues can increase life expectancy and greatly improve quality of life. And, as with all patient populations, early detection significantly improves one’s chances of successful treatment outcomes. SMA’s clinicians have specialized training in the diseases, disorders, and conditions that are commonly found in men, particularly in middle-aged and older men. Since various conditions of the urinary tract, as well as impaired sexual function, are fairly common in older males, one of our Board-Certified urologists will, if appropriate, provide a noninvasive ultrasound procedure to achieve an accurate diagnosis.
There are more than 2,500 benefits programs nationwide for older Americans, according to the National Council on Aging. Medicare beneficiaries, approaching 60 million at the end of 2017, outnumber them all. We provide counseling to our patients at Salerno Medical Associates to help them negotiate what may seem a confusing maze to the best possible health coverage.
The brain, spinal system and nerves are all components of the nervous system. Among the most common neurological diseases or disorders are strokes, migraines, brain tumors, spinal cord disorders and multiple sclerosis. However, there is a wide range we can assess, identify and treat, including various seizure disorders, dementia, movement disorders and Alzheimers.
When it comes to the medical specialty concerned with the musculoskeletal system and its extremities, the spine and associated structures, we have the specialists and tools to diagnose and refer. Our referrals may be to orthopedic surgeons, pain management doctors, neurosurgeons or physical therapists depending on the type and progression of your ailment or injury.
Pain is a complex phenomenon. Enormous advances have been made in the past fifty years in the understanding and treatment of pain. Fortunately, today’s patients have a wide range of treatment options.
SMA Board-Certified pain management specialists focus on the identification and treatment of neck, back, and joint pain, taking a holistic approach to identify the underlying causes or causes of pain. The next step is to create an individualized plan of action to mitigate the pain. Our specialists are equipped to develop minimally invasive surgical procedures to expedite recovery from skeletal and muscle injuries. Each year, SMA successfully treats thousands of patients, using state-of-the-art procedures. We also are committed to patient health literacy; teaching patients benefit versus risk assessment and the safe management of pain if potentially addictive pharmacotherapy must be prescribed.
Treatment of feet and related ailments ranging from corns and bunions to injury, arthritis, and disease. There is a podiatrist available for weekly appointments at our office. We are particularly attentive to diabetics and pre-diabetics who should receive regular foot checkups. Diabetics are particularly susceptible to any type of infection, as well as foot pain and degenerative joint disease. Our services include screening and making referrals to other specialists, and we have shoes on stock made especially for sensitive and painful feet.
Pulmonary & Sleep Medicine
Pulmonary medicine includes a range of respiratory ailments and conditions, including chronic obstructive pulmonary disease (COPD), asthma, acute respiratory distress syndrome (ARDS), various lung diseases, cystic fibrosis, sleep apnea and other impediments to our breathing. At Salerno Medical Associates we test, diagnose, treat and refer to highly qualified specialists when warranted.
They are variously described as thin and faint vessels that sometimes form a spider web pattern; a cosmetic issue that doesn’t require medical treatment, and a smaller version of varicose veins involving the smallest blood vessels, the capillaries. All may be true to some extent, but spider veins, like more prominent varicose veins, may also be a sign of underlying disease in the veins.
Varicose veins are misshapen, bulging veins most likely to be found in the legs and feet. This is because of the greater pressure on the blood vessels in these extremities when upright via walking and standing. Because varicose veins are a result of blood backing up due to vein insufficiency, it may be traced to valves in the veins being weakened and damaged. Instead of blood returning to the heart it may be gradually pooling in leg veins and creating prominent varicose veins.
Vascular (Vein And Periphery, Etc.)
Even though vascular system problems are quite common, they can be serious. Among the major threats are atherosclerosis and blood clots, which inhibit blood flow to the heart or brain. Then there is vein insufficiency, whose surface identifiers may include varicose and spider veins.
Intercontinental travelers should receive the necessary education and preventative care before embarking on their journey. SMA provides examinations, immunizations (based on the countries on one’s itinerary), and counseling for adults. Complete preparation and precautions help to ensure that one will travel safely, with less likelihood of becoming ill.
